The knowledge, tools and experience have existed for some time now to make not just sustainable communities, but communities that are a joy to be a part of. Sadly the biggest obstacle to implementing these new communities is not the technology or cost, but rather the ironic fact that they are illegal by current building codes and zoning standards. Sustainable Hawaii examines these issues and proposed strategies for changing this situation.MODEL GREEN HOMESTEAD ? READINESS IN PARADISE
ALOHA,
We are discovering that WHOPPER LIKE stories can be told about the value of things by wall street, banksters, and real estate brokers, and now the insurance business. Eventually the real value of their offerings was just based on a buy and trade much like feeding frenzy. They have all gone bust …and some people really got stuck at the end of the deal line.
THE SUSTAINABLE OHANA IN ACTION
THE SUSTAINABLE OHANA (UPDATE SEPTEMBER)
HOW THE NEIGHBORHOOD TEAM WORKS DURING AN EMERGENCY
Whenever you talk to people who have lived here for a long time and have seen some tough times, one of the topics that comes up is what did you do specifically when the ships stopped coming, or there was a drought or ….?
FIRST SACRED GROUND GATHERING
The Sacred Ground gathering at Artesia is now history. To say the least those who attended were highly satisfied with the following:
Bucholic surroundings and sacred music
Natural offerings (starts and seeds)
Magical stories of our connection to the earth and her gifts
Young people dancing Hula
An hour to mingle and exchange ideas
Group singing with song sheets and strong leader
Silent meditation to serene music
and nobody missed the talking heads and analysis.
Who's next? How bout the next gathering at another great farmstead? Just launch when ready!!!!
SUSTAINABLE BREAKTHRU!!!! ......The community kitchen
Recently the sustainable Ohana on Kaauhuhu rd. decided to combine efforts and have a single kitchen cook for up to twelve families. We did this to be able to bulk purchase
foods and have a subscription farm order as a way of saving money and increase the cultivating time spent by people now growing food. The savings were shocking! We found that
everyone enjoyed the group aloha and the food created by several really talented cooks. The total savings for each person was over fifty percent of their current food bill.
SUSTAINABLE KOHALA organizes a working Ohana and will share discoveries with Hawaii island players
We have organized to share some interesting land use prototypes that we in OUR OHANA are pioneering. We feel we must try out some new solutions because we are deciding we need a more versatile kind of approach to survive. The old development policies deny us the flexibility we need to grow food, control local power, and therefore have the water we need to make our community more deeply ready.
